Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I scan a receipt?

A: Tap the "Scan Receipt" button on the home screen, take a photo of your receipt or select one from your photo library, and tap "Process Receipt". The AI will automatically extract all items and prices within 3-10 seconds.

Q: Why isn't my receipt scanning properly?

A: Make sure the receipt is well-lit, flat, and the entire receipt is visible in the frame. Avoid shadows, glare, or wrinkles. If the AI validation fails, ensure you're scanning an actual receipt. Some handwritten receipts may not process well.

 

Q: How do I split expenses with friends?

A: After scanning a receipt, tap "Split Expense" and add people from your contacts or manually. Then assign specific items to individuals, or split items equally among multiple people. The app instantly calculates who owes what.

 

Q: Is my data private and secure?

A: Yes! All receipt data is stored locally on your device only. Receipt images are sent to Mistral AI for processing but are not stored. We don't use cloud storage, and your data never syncs to external servers. See our Privacy Policy for details.

 

Q: Do I need an internet connection?

A: Internet is only required when scanning a new receipt to process it with AI. Once receipts are saved, all features work completely offline.

Q: Can I edit receipt details after scanning?

A: Currently, receipt details are extracted by AI and cannot be manually edited. If extraction is incorrect, try rescanning with better lighting or a clearer photo.

 

Q: How do I share expense summaries?

A: After splitting expenses, you can generate a PDF summary and share it via text, email, or any messaging app. You can also send payment requests through Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle.

 

Q: Can I delete receipts?

A: Yes! Tap the delete icon on any receipt card in your history to remove it permanently from your device.

 

Q: What payment methods are supported?

A: TabTracks integrates with Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, and allows you to send payment requests via text message. The app doesn't process payments directly but provides convenient links to these services.

 

Q: Why does the app need camera and contacts permissions?

A: Camera permission is required to scan receipts. Contacts permission (optional) makes it easier to add friends when splitting expenses. You can manage these permissions in your device settings.

Troubleshooting

Receipt Scanning Issues

  • Ensure you have an active internet connection

  • Check that the receipt image is clear and well-lit

  • Make sure the entire receipt is visible in the frame

  • Avoid shadows, glare, or wrinkles on the receipt

  • Wait up to 10 seconds for processing

  • Try taking the photo from directly above the receipt

Camera Permission Denied

  • Go to Settings → TabTracks → Photos & Camera

  • Enable camera and photo library access

  • Restart the app after changing permissions

 

App Crashes or Freezes

  • Force quit the app and reopen it

  • Restart your device

  • Make sure you're running the latest version of TabTracks

  • Check that your iOS version is up to date

  • If the issue persists, contact support with details
